Tips for Opening a Salon, Spa or Barbershop

When it comes to choosing what to do with your beauty industry education, opening your own salon, spa, or barbershop is probably at the top of the list for many people. After all, being your own boss means being in control of your destiny. But it also means that you’ve got to figure out exactly how to start your own business, and that can be a daunting prospect. Don’t sweat it beauty entrepreneurs! We’ve rounded up some great tips to get you started, and on the road to a future where you get to tell the world that “you’re not the boss of me.”

1. Develop a brand identity

Every business starts as an idea that evolves into a name or logo; ultimately becoming your brand. What will you call your business? What does your brand look like on the walls of your salon, spa, or barbershop? Who is your target audience? This is the exciting and creative part, so enjoy it and start brainstorming.

2. Location, location, location

Selecting a location for your business is an important step. Before you decide on where your shop will be, you should consider a few key points about location:

  • Distance from you and your current clients.
  • Other similar shops in the area.
  • Lease requirements and cost.
  • Parking and laundry facilities.
  • Layout of space.

3. Research the legal local and state requirements

Even thoughyou may already have your cosmetology, esthetician, or barbering license, be sure to research what type of business or occupational license is required for your area. It’s also a good idea to consult with a tax professional to be sure you understand your business’ potential tax liability. Getting all the information in advance will help you prepare to hit the ground running.

4. Create a business plan

No matter what kind of business you’re opening, having a road map for every step of the process of starting, and running your business is crucial. Writing a business plan gives you the chance to think through every step of the process, from marketing and financing your business, sourcing and procuring equipment, to deciding what services to offer and how much to charge for them. It can also help you identify hurdles or pitfalls to avoid before you launch. Score.org, the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) non-profit partner, not only offers an easy to use business plan template to assist you, they also have a network of business-savvy mentors who volunteer their time to help startups for FREE!

5. Decide what your business core values are

And hire people who align with them. Knowing what your goals and mission statement are will help you hire the right people who are more likely to contribute to the overall success of your business.

6. Make technology your friend

In today’s digital marketplace, technology can be a valuable tool. Create a social media presence for your new shop to get the word out and if you have a website, make sure it’s user friendly and search-engine friendly. After all, you want people to find you. Consider having an online booking platform for appointments to make it even easier for your clients to get a seat in your chair.

7. Make opening day an event to remember

Put the finishing touches on your décor, hang a grand opening banner and make it a celebration! Consider offering opening day incentives for folks to check out your shop and definitely shout it to the world through social media, local advertising, and maybe some flyers at businesses around you. It’s also a great way to network with business owners in your area and help grow a supportive community vibe.

It’s safe to say that opening your own shop may not be the easiest thing in the world, but it might just be the most rewarding. With careful planning and determination, you can turn your passion for the beauty industry into what you do for a living and be your own boss.
